Caribbean Islands, Beyond the Coastlines

It is almost common knowledge that the Caribbean is the best place for swimming, diving and simply enjoying the sun. Undeniably the prime destination for enjoying scenic beaches and admiring a rich and well-preserved marine life, pleasure cruisers are in for a surprise because there is more to the Caribbean Islands than meets the coastline.

The Bahamas, first stop as one goes farther from the coast of Florida. This group of islands is historically significant for being the first place where Christopher Columbus landed when he discovered the New World. The island of Nassau is home to the Atlantis Hotel Aquarium, the hotel boasts of the largest open air aquarium in the world and offers one a chance to view the myriad collection of marine species found in the Caribbean.

The next destination is Cuba. Aside from providing the world with the best tobacco, this is also the natural habitat for the world’s smallest bird, the bee hummingbird. A touch of Spanish culture flavors this country, specially the old Spanish architecture well preserved in churches like the Cathedral de Santiago.

The island of Hispaniola is not one to be missed. Divided between Haiti and Dominican Republic, Hispaniola offers extremely diverse exotic treats. Haiti has a dominantly African culture and is flanked by mountains on one side and scenic beaches such as the Kalico Beach on another. On Hispaniola’s other half is the Dominican Republic, a Spanish- influenced country. The most popular destination is the Altos de Chavon in La Romana, an international community for art and design where one may explore and even study about the island’s rich pre-Columbian heritage.

A cruise along the Caribbean is not complete without a visit to Jamaica. Along a similar trail of thought, a visit to Jamaica will not be complete without enjoying the island’s coffee straight from the blue mountains.
